Sunvair is a full-service National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP) and U.S. Air Force–approved HVOF Thermal Spray provider with one-stop-shop capability. Our in-house CNC Grinding, Plating, Shot Peening, Painting, and Non-Destructive Testing capabilities allow us to provide industry-leading turnaround times for our thermal spray product line, and our quality systems ensure the highest standards are achieved on every job.

Our leadership team has many years of collective experience in HVOF thermal spray technology, and has been collaborating with industry OEMs since its early days of adoption into the aerospace world as a wear-resistant coating. We employ a highly qualified thermal spray department that is invested in meeting our customers’ needs and going above and beyond standard industry requirements.

Grinding & Machining

With onsite access to spherical, cylindrical, and surface grinders, lathes, drill presses, hone tables, mills, and CNC machines, Sunvair performs all grinding and machining operations in house. The vast amount of equipment we maintain allows each machining operation to have at least one secondary machine for a backup role.

We have carved a unique niche in the commercial aerospace industry with our highly technical spherical Inner Diameter (ID) and Outer Diameter (OD) operations. Our grinder operators have decades of experience and are capable of performing the most challenging grinding procedures.

Tooling

Sunvair tools can generate operational efficiency and accuracy for the chromium-plating process, and have been proven to shorten typical plating processes up to six times, compared to traditional methods. Sunvair’s tooling capabilities were added in 2020, when we acquired Advanced Tooling Company (ATC), which has serviced the defense, aerospace, OEM, and MRO markets since 2004.

Plating

Sunvair’s onsite plating facilities support its HVOF thermal spray and cargo loading system product lines. Full vertical integration through plating allows us to provide tighter turnaround times and a great degree of quality control to our customers.

Available processes include:

  • Hard Chrome
  • Cadmium
  • Low Hydrogen Embrittlement (LHE) Cadmium
  • Brush Cadmium
  • Anodize
  • Titanium Anodize
  • Sulfamate Nickel
  • Zinc-nickel
  • Chem Film
  • Shot Peen

Available Inspections

  • Dimensional Calibrated Checks
  • Mag Particle Inspection
  • Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection
  • Nital Etch / Temper Etch
  • Eddy Current

Tank Depth

With Tank Depths of more than ten feet, Sunvair’s plating tanks can accommodate landing gear components of nearly every size, from Bombardier Q400 to Boeing 787. For environmental safety, all tanks were built above ground with redundant layers of leak detection and protection.

Nickel and Cadmium Plating

Our nickel and cadmium electroplating fixtures and associated support tooling consist of variations of conforming and no-mask conforming anode systems. This tooling is custom designed for each application utilizing pure nickel, cadmium, steel, stainless steel, platinum, and platinized titanium anode materials.

If you have a large component that doesn’t fit into your existing plating tank, we also specialize in out-of-tank, flow-style anode plating systems for these components.

No-Mask Anode Design

Traditional electroplating requires careful masking of any areas that need protection from the plating process. While effective, this process is time-consuming and exposes workers to hazardous chemicals. Sunvair’s No-Mask Anode process reduces costs, improves safety, and drives quicker turnaround times.

Benefits include:

  • Precise part-to-anode centering
  • Improved coating uniformity with less edge buildup and reduced grinding time
  • Reduced setup time, with improved productivity and throughput
  • Less exposure to lead and safer handling and storage for workers, due to internally encased anode inserts
  • Reduced energy costs due to lower-voltage operation
  • Lower fugitive chrome emissions and environmental health dangers
  • Elimination of masking, demasking, and masking waste bi-products
  • Made from premium materials, improving durability, with interchangeable construction for long life
  • Parts may be refurbished at 50-60% of new costs

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Sunvair offers onsite Level III Magnetic Particle, Fluorescent Liquid Penetrate, Nital/Temper Etch, and Eddy Current inspections. This enables us to perform all required non-destructive testing onsite, which translates to faster turnaround times and better cost control.

Inspection

Sunvair incorporates multiple inspections beyond the Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) requirements, which result in “best in industry” overhauls. While self-imposed, these additional inspections ensure longer on-wing time, thus lowering long-term costs to airlines. Additionally, Sunvair tightens the allowable CMM dimension tolerances to provide a perfect fit at assembly. Our inspectors plan repairs that remove the minimal amount of base material, allowing a longer life for each part.

Sunvair also maintains a robust tooling calibration inspection process, using both internal documentation and outside credited calibration companies to maintain the highest of standards.

Inspection Equipment includes:

  • Zeiss CMM, Contura G2, VAST XT Probe, 1000/1200/600, w/ Calypso V5.4
  • AmScope SW-3T24Z, 20X-40X-80X, Trinocular Stereo Microscope w/ 10MP Camera
  • AmScope ME1400TC, 40X-1000X, Digital Inverted Trinocular Metallurgical
  • Microscope with Lexus IS-Capture-Measurement Software w/ 10MP Camera
